At Raphael’s School of Beauty Culture, our commitment to students, staff, and the communities we serve has always been at the heart of everything we do. We’re proud to share that this dedication has been recognized with one of the region’s most distinguished business honors: the 2026 BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Trust, presented by the Better Business Bureau of the Mahoning Valley.

An Honor Rooted in Integrity

The BBB Torch Awards celebrate organizations that demonstrate leadership, community impact, and customer trust. Raphael’s was selected alongside four other outstanding Mahoning Valley organizations, a recognition that reflects the values our team upholds every single day — ethics, service, accountability, and a genuine investment in the people and places around us.

“I just wanted to say thank you to the community, the Raphael’s team—and also the students who entrust us with their education. We’re doing a good job in helping change lives,” said Ralph Delserone, president of Raphael’s School of Beauty Culture, in accepting the award in a May ceremony.

Melissa Ames, president of , described some of the reasons Raphael’s, among other standout local businesses, was recognized.

“Raphael’s has been in business since the 1950s. Really, it’s remarkable how they have changed and they have adapted, and they’re able to still continue to serve their customers and be successful,” said Ames. “And that’s what we should all aspire to. They’re doing it the right way.”

More Than 55 Years of Serving Ohio

As a family-owned business for over 55 years, Raphael’s has built a reputation for listening to student feedback, staying on top of industry trends, and keeping programs engaging and valuable so graduates feel prepared for the future. What began as McKinley Heights College of Cosmetology in 1958 has grown into a network of six campuses across Ohio, offering programs in cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, manicuring, and massage therapy.

Many of our graduates have gone on to successful careers as cosmetologists, educators, salon owners, and industry professionals — a track record we’re deeply proud of and one that has shaped our reputation throughout the region.

A Community Commitment That Runs Deep

The BBB Torch Awards emphasize that strong local businesses help strengthen the regional economy, and we’ve always believed that. Raphael’s has thrived and grown because of the trust placed in us by students, families, and local employers. That trust is something we never take for granted.

Looking Ahead

Receiving the BBB Torch Award is a tremendous honor, but it’s also a reminder of why we do this work. Every student who walks through our doors deserves an education built on integrity, current industry knowledge, and genuine support. We’ll carry this recognition forward as we continue to grow, evolve, and bring beauty to life across Ohio.

Congratulations to our entire team (instructors, staff, and students alike) and thank you to the BBB of the Mahoning Valley for this meaningful recognition.

For many students, choosing a beauty school is about more than learning a skill. It’s about finding a place where they feel supported, inspired, and confident in their potential. For Juliana Fimiani, Raphael’s School of Beauty became that place, helping her grow not only as a nail technician, but as a professional ready to step into the industry with confidence.

After graduating from the Esthetics & Nail Technology programs in June 2025, Juliana is now putting her skills to work at Manifest Manicures & Mixology in Shaker Heights, Ohio, while continuing to build her personal brand and creative voice in the nail industry.

Why Juliana Chose Raphael’s School of Beauty

Juliana knew early on that the environment of a school mattered just as much as the education itself. When she found Raphael’s, the sense of encouragement stood out immediately.

“I chose Raphael‘s because they made me feel welcome and confident that I could become great at nails,” she says.

That feeling of belonging helped set the foundation for her success throughout the program.

A Transformative Experience in the Classroom

For Juliana, her time at Raphael’s was as much about personal growth as it was about hard skills. Supportive instructors played a key role in helping her step outside her comfort zone and discover her confidence.

“My nail instructor helped me come out of my shell and try things I’ve never done before and made me the confident nail technician I am today, and I am very grateful for her,” says Juliana.

That encouragement allowed Juliana to develop both her technical skills and the self-assurance needed to thrive in a hands-on client service industry.

Graduation: A Memorable Milestone

When asked about her favorite memory at Raphael’s, Juliana didn’t hesitate to reflect on a milestone that marked the culmination of her hard work.

“My favorite memory at Raphael’s is probably my graduation day, when all of my friends and family got to see me graduate and finally accomplish everything I’ve wanted to.”

Graduation day represented not just the end of a program, but the beginning of a career she worked toward with determination and passion.

Life After Graduation

Today, Juliana is applying what she learned at Raphael’s in a high-end non-toxic beauty lounge that offers elevated nail services to clients. She continues to refine her style and connect with clients. Her journey reflects what’s possible when education, mentorship, and confidence come together.

“My experience at Raphael’s is definitely one I won’t forget,” says Juliana.

For many students, the decision to pursue a career in beauty starts with a feeling: a spark of creativity, a love for self-expression, or a desire to help others feel confident. For Raphael’s School of Beauty alumna Jordan Decker, that spark was there from the very beginning.

“I have always loved beauty ever since I was a kid,” Jordan shares. “It has been something I’ve taught myself at home for years.”

Like many creative-minded students, Jordan knew early on that a traditional college path wasn’t the right fit. “I was unsure of what major I wanted to pursue, but I did know I wanted to turn my passion into a career,” she explains. “That’s why I chose Raphael’s School of Beauty—to build on what I already loved and gain the professional training and skills to succeed in the beauty industry.”

Jordan graduated from Raphael’s in 2022 from the Advanced Cosmetology program and is now thriving as the owner of Blue J Nails in Youngstown, Ohio, a modern nail salon known for detailed nail art and elevated client experiences. Her journey from student to working professional is a powerful example of how passion, training, and community come together at Raphael’s.

Connection and Friendship in Beauty School

At Raphael’s, Jordan found more than technical education—she also found connection. One of the things Raphael’s alumni consistently highlight is the strong sense of community, and Jordan’s experience reflects that deeply. “Raphael’s School of Beauty gave me lifelong friendships that extended beyond the classroom,” she says. “The bonds I built with classmates and the constant support from my instructors truly changed my life.”

Those relationships played a key role in helping Jordan grow not only as a cosmetologist, but as a person. “They helped me not only with school but also with personal challenges, and I’ll always be grateful,” she adds.

It’s this combination of hands-on learning, mentorship, and genuine care that sets the Raphael’s experience apart.

What She Remembers About Her First Day in Beauty School

When asked about her favorite memory at school, Jordan doesn’t hesitate. “My favorite memory at Raphael’s will always be my very first day,” she says. “I met so many amazing new friends. I instantly connected with a few girls and built close friendships that made my time there so special.”

Starting cosmetology school can feel intimidating, but for Jordan, that first day set the tone for everything that followed. “Starting a new chapter can be scary, but I felt so welcomed and excited to be part of Raphael’s from the very beginning.”

Career Promises Fulfilled

Today, Jordan brings that same enthusiasm and dedication into her career at Blue J Nails. Working in a professional salon environment allows her to continue refining her skills, expressing her creativity, and building meaningful relationships with clients, just as she once did with classmates and instructors at Raphael’s.

Blue J Nails is thriving and making its name as a top-notch nail salon in the community. Jordan offers clients everything from gel and acrylic nails to custom nail art with intricate, hand-painted designs. A client raves: “Blue J Nails is hands-down my favorite nail spot!” More than one happy client has admired how Jordan is able to take an inspo photo and execute on the idea perfectly for them.

Inspiration for Aspiring Beauty Pros

Jordan’s story is a reminder that success in the beauty industry isn’t just about talent; it’s about finding the right place to grow. With a strong foundation, supportive educators, and a community that feels like family, Raphael’s School of Beauty helped Jordan turn a lifelong passion into a fulfilling career.

For prospective students who know they want more than a traditional path—and who are ready to invest in their creativity—Jordan Decker’s journey shows what’s possible when passion meets purpose at Raphael’s.

Committing to a cosmetology program can be so daunting. Hearing from others who have taken the leap can certainly make it easier to jump! Here we profile just a few of our wonderful alumni who are movers and shakers in their hair styling careers after graduating from Raphael’s School of Beauty. We love our amazing alumni—and we believe that if they can do it, you can do it too.

Marina Dobson, Independent Hair Stylist

Raphael’s helped jump-start my career from the beginning. Working with real-life clients throughout the school day helped me build the confidence I needed to build my clientele!

I dealt with real-life scenarios before I had even started at a salon. I still use that foundation of knowledge behind the chair today. I have been working behind the chair for 7 years. I’ve had 3 children in the last 4 years and have successfully managed to help support my family due to the unique flexibility that being a hairstylist offers.

I have moved from working in a salon, to owning my own suite, to booth renting, and working towards my goal of owning my own salon one day!

I give a lot of credit to Raphael’s Beauty School for my successful career. They truly do change lives!

Brittany Meeks, Master Stylist and Salon Manager

I appreciate everything I learned from Raphael’s. I talk to other stylists and their experience at school, and my experience goes above and beyond theirs. I was challenged, exposed to advanced techniques, and had an ample amount of time with many clients.

Not only was I taught the technical side, but also the personal and business side of our industry. The exposure and assistance I had helped me grow into the confidence stylist I am today.

Shout-out to the Brunswick campus—they’re amazing! Thank you!

Madison Rice, Hair Stylist

Raphael’s really helped me build confidence in engaging with clients one-on-one, which made meeting new people in my career far less intimidating.

The instructors were always kind and encouraging, pushing us to step outside our comfort zones and take on services that helped us grow. Their support prepared me to excel as a stylist and feel confident going out on my own.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a Nail Technician, maybe you’ve wondered how to get started or what the requirements are to get into a beauty school. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for nail care and nail art services continues to grow. This means that the beauty industry can offer endless opportunities for skilled professionals.

In this blog, we hope to guide you through the steps of becoming a licensed nail technician in Ohio!

Schedule A Tour

The post Do I Qualify for Financial Aid? appeared first on °”ÍűTV.

]]>
So you’re thinking about school but you’re not sure how to pay for it? Financial aid can be a big help, but sometimes it can be confusing. We’d love to help you figure it out and we hope this will help.

What is financial aid?

 • Financial aid helps students pay for school and other related expenses. It can come in different forms. Some forms are need-based, like grants and some loans. Eligibility for these will be determined by financial standing. There are others that are merit-based, like some scholarships. That means those who receive them are chosen based on talent, grades, or other qualifiers.

What is the difference between grants and loans?

 • The difference between the two is that loans MUST be repaid while grants do not. At our school, many of our students receive a combination of Pell grants and Direct loans, which may be subsidized or unsubsidized. Subsidized loans are loans that the government will pay for the growing interest until your grace period is over[i]. An unsubsidized loan will start to grow interest that you are responsible for from the first disbursement. Neither loan will enter repayment until after your grace period is up.

How do I know if I’m eligible for federal financial aid?

 • In order to see if you qualify for any federal financial aid, you must first fill out the FAFSA (). This application will look at your (or your parents’) income from the previous year and family size. After it is completed, results will be sent to the school that you choose and they will be able to make up an award letter for you, so you know what kind of aid you can use to pay for school. Most people do qualify for financial aid!

How do I start paying back my loans?

 • When you take out a federal student loan, you will be assigned to a loan servicer. That is the company that you will actually make your monthly loan payments to. You will have six months after you leave school where payments will not be required. This is called your grace period. Though they aren’t required, payments are accepted while you are in school and during your grace period.
 • Different payment plans will be available to you while in repayment. Some will depend on the amount owed and others will be income-driven, meaning that the monthly amount due will be determined from the money you make. You will always start off on the standard repayment plan. If you are interested in a different repayment plan, you will need to contact your loan servicer for the next step.

What if financial aid isn’t enough?

 • If after you fill out the FAFSA, you find that there is not enough aid available to cover the cost of tuition, our school also offers monthly payment plans to make up the difference. This will allow you to start classes and pay off your balance a little at a time.

In this blog post, we will delve into five compelling reasons why choosing a job in cosmetology can be a rewarding and fulfilling career choice!

Job Opportunities Are Growing Rapidly With Strong Job Stability

With steadily increasing job opportunities and strong career potential, becoming a licensed cosmetologist can be a smart move. The rate of employment in the cosmetology industry is projected to grow 11% by the year 2031, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Recent popularity in fashion hair colors, chemical hair treatments, and advanced skincare are leading to further job opportunities in this field. With more than half a million jobs in the cosmetology field, opportunities to start a career are vast!

The beauty industry has shown remarkable resilience, even during challenging economic times. People always want to look and feel their best, making cosmetology an industry with strong job stability. As long as there are weddings, proms, red-carpet events, and everyday beauty needs, there should be a demand for skilled cosmetologists.

Opportunities For Personal Connections

One of the most rewarding aspects of a career in cosmetology is the opportunity to build personal connections with clients. As a cosmetologist, you have the chance to interact with diverse individuals from all walks of life, each with their unique style and story. By fostering a welcoming and comfortable environment, you can create lasting relationships with your clients, becoming not just their stylist but also a trusted confidant. Working closely with clients can be immensely gratifying as you witness the positive impact you have on their self-esteem and confidence.

At the heart of every successful cosmetologist-client relationship is the ability to foster a welcoming and comfortable environment. When clients step into your salon or sit in your chair, they are seeking more than just a physical transformation; they are seeking a space where they can feel valued, heard, and understood. By honing your communication skills and empathetic nature, you can establish an atmosphere of trust, encouraging clients to open up about their preferences, aspirations, and even personal struggles.

Develop Your Creativity

If you have a passion for artistic expression, cosmetology is an ideal career choice. It provides you with a platform to showcase your creativity and transform people’s appearances. Whether you’re designing a stunning haircut, experimenting with vibrant hair colors, or applying makeup to enhance someone’s natural beauty, cosmetology allows you to let your imagination run wild.

By choosing cosmetology, you can embark on a journey where you can unleash your artistic abilities and bring beauty to life.

Cosmetology isn’t just about following predefined patterns; it encourages originality and personal touch. Each client is unique, and you have the opportunity to customize your approach to cater to their preferences and needs. From elegant updos for special occasions to edgy haircuts that make a bold statement, your creativity knows no bounds as you design looks that leave a lasting impression.

Career Flexibility

Being a licensed cosmetologist provides the education and knowledge to pursue a variety of careers and interests. Enjoy being your own boss? Flex your entrepreneurial muscles and open your own salon. Don’t like thinking about the business side of things? Work in an established salon and focus on doing what you love. What is Cosmetology?

Let’s start by first explaining what cosmetology is and what you might expect from a future career. A cosmetologist is someone who is trained in a variety of beauty services to provide for clients. When people imagine a cosmetologist, they might think of someone who knows how to cut, style, and cut hair. While this is an important part of a cosmetologist’s career, this is far from the only beauty services they can provide to clients. In addition to hair, a cosmetologist could know how to perform services in nails, facials, waxing, makeup, and more!

What Would I Learn in Raphael’s Cosmetology Program?

At °”ÍűTV, we make sure to include both technical and business skills in beauty so you can pursue the career you’re most passionate about after graduating. Here are just some of the lessons in our curriculum that you could learn during our program:

 • Cutting and styling hair
 • Chemical treatments
 • Makeup application
 • Relaxation massage
 • Hiring employees
 • Beauty industry business practices

With over 50 years of teaching students how they can become beauty professionals, we’re continually updating our curriculum to include the latest trends in the industry. During our program, you can learn all of these lessons through a combination of classroom time and practicing what you’ve learned on real guests under the direct supervision of licensed professionals. Contact us to learn more about what your personal education could look like at our school!

2. Research

Applying for a cosmetology program is a big commitment! Researching more about the beauty school you could be attending is an important step to making sure that their program is right for you. Start by looking up the school’s website to get a general overview of what your experience as a student might be like there. As a beauty school student, you would be spending a lot of time with your instructors and other beauty students. It’s important that you feel comfortable with the environment and mission statement of where you’ll be studying.

There’s only so much that you can learn about a school from their website. The next step is to schedule a tour! This is your opportunity to ask questions about your personal beauty journey and receive immediate answers from the people most qualified to help. Here are just questions you can ask on your tour:

 • What is your school’s culture like?
 • Do you offer financial aid?
 • Do you offer multiple scheduling options?
 • What are your school’s missions and values?

A tour is a great way for you to experience our school’s culture for yourself. Not only will your tour of our school allow you to meet our instructors and tour the facilities, but you’ll also be able to talk with students and even receive a haircut! Now you find out through your personal salon experience what you could learn through our cosmetology program.

Do you want to take your passion for beauty and turn it into a career? Maybe you’ve always wanted to become a cosmetologist, but you weren’t sure where to start. That’s why we’ve created this guide that covers everything you need for a future in cosmetology. From learning techniques at an accredited school and passing the state licensure exam to continually learning new styles in an industry that lets you express your creativity, we explain it all. Here is a step-by-step of how to make your beauty dreams a reality:

 • Attend a beauty school licensed by the state of Ohio
 • Pass the Ohio state licensure exam
 • Find an area of cosmetology you love
 • Continue your education to maintain licensure requirements

Attend a Beauty School Licensed by the State of Ohio

You can’t start your career in cosmetology without learning a variety of beauty techniques and how to properly apply them. Attending an accredited beauty school is an exciting phase of your cosmetology journey. It can be a great time to learn exciting beauty trends while making connections with other people in the industry. Hair cutting and coloring, makeup techniques, and facials are just some beauty subjects you could learn! Wondering how to decide where you should attend beauty school? Here are some things you should consider when picking the school that’s right for you!

Program Hours

According to the Ohio Board of Cosmetology, students must complete at least 1500 hours of cosmetology training to apply for a license. Before choosing a beauty school, you should make sure that it offers a cosmetology program with the required number of hours. The last thing you want is to find out after graduation that you aren’t qualified to move on to the next step of receiving your cosmetology license.

Flexible Scheduling

Let’s face it, life can feel pretty busy! That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go after what you love. Finding a beauty school with flexible scheduling hours can help you study what you’re passionate about when it’s most convenient.

Financial Aid

If cosmetology is your passion, then you deserve to pursue an education in beauty. It can be a big investment, and that’s why some beauty schools offer financial aid options to students who qualify. Federal Pell grants and direct student loans are a few examples of financial aid that could be available to you.

Tour the School

There’s only so much you can find out about a school by doing research online. If you really want to get exposed to the school’s atmosphere, then scheduling a tour can be a great way to see the school’s culture for yourself. While you’re there, make sure to ask any other questions you may have about attending beauty school. This is the perfect time to get all the information you need to make your decision.

Pass the Ohio State Licensure Exam

At °”ÍűTV, our cosmetology program is 1800 hours to help you gain skills that can open more opportunities for you in the cosmetology world! Once you have completed the required 1800 hours of cosmetology training, you can now apply to take the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology’s licensing exams. The exam will cover both practical and theory portions. It’s important that you prepare for both sections.

Practical Cosmetology Exam

The practical portion of the exam allows you to show off the skills and techniques you’ve learned from beauty school. From exhibiting proper cleaning techniques to performing various hair techniques, this test will allow you to demonstrate your ability of becoming a successful cosmetologist!

Theory Cosmetology Exam

The theory portion of the cosmetology exam is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions with 90 minutes given to complete it. Safety procedures, product knowledge, and hair care are just some of the topics this section of the test covers.

After passing both portions of the exam, you are now qualified to submit a license application to the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. Congratulations! This is a huge accomplishment and opens up a wide array of possibilities for you in the cosmetology world.

Find an Area of Cosmetology You Love

Now that you’ve received your cosmetology license, it’s time to have all your hard work pay off. The career options in cosmetology is one of the best parts of the beauty industry, and it allows you to choose which area you most want to pursue for a career. After learning a variety of beauty techniques from your education, it’s time to decide what you want for a future cosmetology career. Some beauty schools even include business skills in their curriculum, which can help you manage and own a beauty business of your own. Just some of the careers that could be available to you after receiving advanced training in our cosmetology program are:

 • Hairstylist
 • Hair colorist
 • Salon owner or manager
 • Makeup artist
 • Cosmetology instructor
 • Nail technician
 • Spa esthetician

In this industry, it all depends on you and how you want to express your creativity. At °”ÍűTV, our cosmetology program teaches students anatomy of hair, chemical services, salon supervision and management, product sales, and so much more! We cover multiple aspects of beauty so you can leave feeling prepared for whatever career path you want to pursue.

Continue Your Education to Maintain Licensure Requirements

Graduating from cosmetology school doesn’t mean that there’s nothing else to learn! Since the beauty industry is always changing with new trends, the state of Ohio requires that all cosmetologists complete eight hours of continuing education every two years. Once you complete these hours, you’ll receive a certification that allows you to continue your cosmetology career.

If you love nails and are thinking about enrolling in a nail technician program, researching possible careers could be an important part in making your decisions going forward. From trims and polishes, to miniature nail art, nail technicians have the chance to work in an exciting field doing a variety of tasks. We’ve compiled a list of potential careers you could pursue in manicuring once you finish school. Check them out and see what might be the best fit for you.

1: Salon/Spas

Thinking about nails, your mind probably jumps to a salon. Salons and spas are the most conventional types of careers for nail technicians, and for good reason. Working at a salon is a great starting point for any type of technician. Here you can build on the skills your learned in school and get experience with all the different types of services you can offer. At certain salons you might even have the option to choose a flexible work schedule.

The salon environment offers some other great benefits. It provides the opportunity to build rapport with clients and get referrals. You can also learn a lot about different products and brands you use, learn new trends and techniques, and become more knowledgeable about the services performed.

If a traditional salon or spa isn’t for you, there are many other places you might be able to work as a nail tech, including:

 • Vacation resorts
 • Cruise ships
 • Airport spas
 • Country clubs

2: Retail and Consulting

As a nail technician, you can become an expert in all things nails. Your clients will look to you to educate them and recommend the right products for their nails. Salons also rely on their technicians to upsell products and special services to clients and customers. Some spas give technicians a commission for selling their products or services, which means you could earn even more than your base wage.

If you’re more interested in the editorial side of the beauty industry, you could be a consultant for magazines or celebrities to help choose the right products to be on-camera. Our Advanced Manicurist program could provide you with the education and skills to help you become the voice of experience and knowledge when it comes to nail art and design. Remember to build up a beautiful portfolio and get referrals if you decide to go this route.

3: Mobile Manicurist

Perhaps the salon environment isn’t right for you. If you prefer a workspace with a little less structure, you might consider working out of your own home or traveling to your clients. This option means that you provide equipment and supplies, but also provides a lot of freedom and other job opportunities.

There is a lot of potential to cater to different events like bachelorette or birthday parties with your custom nail services. Your clients can enjoy a unique experience only you can provide. With an entrepreneurial streak you may enjoy the freedom of this type of career and can be your own boss and getting out on your own means you’re meeting new people all the time.

4. Salon Owner

If you already have some natural management and leadership skills, building up a salon of your own may be a natural next step. Ask yourself if you prefer managing other people or managing your nail station. If you are prepared to put in some hard work, and find your own space, owning a nail salon could be the perfect outlet for your unique vision!

Salon owners may need some additional business training. At Raphaels, our cosmetology program covers beauty industry business practices and we strive to help our students become business-ready graduates.

5: Nail Tech Educator

If you love learning about all things nails and feel like you never want to leave, maybe pursuing a career as an educator could be a good choice. Carry on the tradition of nail technology by teaching it to others. This is often a great option for those with patience and a lot of experience.

To become qualified to teach nails, you may need some postsecondary education or training in manicure instruction. It may also be necessary to have a license in nail technology and some previous working experience. Many beauty schools offer a training program for future educators and you can find a lot of resources in your own education to help get you started on this path.

Turn Your Love of Nails Into a Career!

Are you ready to make the move from beauty-lover to beauty professional? Let your passion lead the way as you consider future careers in nail technology. Whether you love working with people or prefer to be your own boss as a licensed professional, the nail tech industry may be in your future.

At Raphael’s, we strive to help our students become the professionals they want to be. Take a look at our advanced manicuring program or see if you can add an esthetics or cosmetology program to an existing nail course. Raphaels offers a variety of beauty education courses including esthetics, massage, and barbering. We hope to help our students develop professional-level skills and hone their own natural talents. Become well-rounded in your education with classes that work with your busy schedule and adapt to new trends and modern techniques!

Contact one of our friendly admissions officers today for more information on our manicuring programs or to book a tour of the school. We can’t wait to learn more about you and your beauty dreams!
